What Good Are Statistics Anyway?

18 October, 2010 (14:31) | HOCKEY TALK | By: Nick

1st PlaceEver wonder why we have stats and what purpose they serve? Statistics trap us into analysis paralysis. No amount of statistical analysis can ever produce certainty.

Having said this, I did a little analysis based on the standings from Week #1.

Do you know that over the past 9 seasons, 3 out of the top 4 winners were actually in the top 4 when week #1 standings were published to start the season. That would mean that 3 of the top 4 in this week’s standings (Louis, Joe D., Giacomo and Steve) could go on to win money and add to that statistic!

Note: The only exception was Season 13, where only 1 of the top 4 in the week #1 standings went on to finish in the money at the end of the season, and he finished in 4th place. Personally, I prefer the latter statistic over the former one :).
