Nothing for Habs Fans to Get Excited About

25 February, 2020 (15:52) | HOCKEY TALK | By: Nick

(from Global News)

It’s not that Marc Bergevin doesn’t win trades. It’s that he doesn’t know how to build a team. Winning trades doesn’t get you to the playoffs. Building a team gets you to the playoffs. Make it four seasons in the last five that Montreal Canadiens will miss the post-season. Bergevin has had only two playoff wins in his last five years at the helm. He’s finished eight seasons as the Habs’ GM.

But hey, he got a second-round draft pick for Marco Scandella when he only invested a fourth. He got a third-rounder for Ilya Kovalchuk when no one else wanted him. He got a fifth-round pick for Nate Thompson. And he got a fourth for Nick Cousins. Maybe, Trevor Timmins can get Connor McDavid with one of those picks.

Prices are too high when he is a buyer. Prices are too low when he is a seller. The trade deadline has passed and he has not traded Tomas Tatar and Jeff Petry. They are assets under contract only until the end of next season; then they are free to go anywhere they choose. Again, he didn’t choose to build a team. He could have had two first-round draft choices and two top prospects who could become the elite players of tomorrow.

Even if they make the playoffs, next season — is that the definition of success? Does everyone say that it was wise to have kept Petry and Tatar because they made the playoffs? Is that the bottom line? Well done, Habs. You did it. You made the playoffs.  They’re not winning the Stanley Cup next year. The cup is the goal, not simply making the playoffs.

Marc Bergevin has had eight years. He has won two playoff games in the last five years.  The next time Bergevin wins a trade, he will be lauded as savvy while the search for a left side top-tier defender continues, while the search for elite scoring talent continues. Bergevin’s main message seems to be wait till next year. Canadiens fans should be getting used to that by now.

Go Habs Go!

I hope you feel better now that you got that off your chest!

I didn’t write it but I agree with it. How can you not agree with the facts and the reality of what you see game in and game out? Bergevin’s time is up. He doesn’t have a plan and talks gibberish all the time. Sadly with the Habs only looking at French speaking candidates for GMs and Coaches, they limit themselves to mediocre talent. Still my team but I wish Molson would wake up and see they’re headed nowhere fast while all the other teams are getting better faster.

I tend to agree with what has been written and I too have always been a Habs fan, but we must face reality. Molson is happy to look at the $$$$ side going into his pockets until the Quebecois fans wake up & smell the coffee. When you watch a Habs game and look at their bench, there is no potential goal scorer threat for the opposing team. I still believe Price & Petry could have given the Habs 2 or 3 potential players for now & the future. Cheers.

I agree with all of what you guys are saying, but as I said from day one, Molson is to be blamed for everything and nobody else, he knows nothing about hockey!

Champ, the only thing Molson is guilty of is not firing Bergevin. Not trading Tatar and Petry puts him a very delicate situation. End of next year, these guys will each get $6 to $7 mill per year, is he ready to pay that? Our team will be full of mediocre players. I would have traded Tatar to Tampa for Fote alone. He things his guys are gold when they are a bunch of Smurfs.

AGREED! MOLSON is a MORON when it comes to HOCKEY! That is why I tell everyone to stop buying beer from the concession stands. At $12.50/beer … people drink like it’s free. Unbelievable!!! If people stop buying beer, he will get the message.

Joe, exactly my point, he is the only one to blame! Nick, stop buying beer…..lol, don’t want to insult anyone, but these Quebecers, won’t stop buying beer, its like asking us Italians to stop eating pasta!
