Team Canada – Why the logo change?

Why the logo change? The new logo and jersey replaces the familiar design exclusively for the Olympics to comply with International Olympic Committee rules. The IOC regulation forbids sport federations from displaying their logos on uniforms at the Olympics, which includes Hockey Canada’s trademark Maple Leaf with a hockey player. Hockey Canada says it has been able to get around the rule in the past by having the Canadian Olympic Committee sign an exemption from Games uniform regulations. But the IOC strictly enforced its rules at the recent Beijing Games – notably with the Brazilian and Argentine soccer teams – and is doing the same in Vancouver.
The new look has several icons and cultural symbols embossed in the maple leaf including smaller maple leafs, a thunderbird, an eagle and a hockey player. The jersey is available in white and red will be exclusively worn in Vancouver by the men’s and women’s ice hockey team at the 2010 Olympics and by the sledge hockey team at the Paralympics. After the Vancouver event, Hockey Canada will go back to the normal jersey and logo. Go Canada Go!
